William Northover is a chemist. For the past thirty years he has worked with glass. His work has helped to make things like transistors last longer. He has also worked on glass fibres. These are tubes of glass used to carry information. By passing a light along a fibre, we can have faster, cheaper and more reliable telephone and computer systems. Three miles used to be the limit that information could travel along one length of fibre. Northover has made glass fibres that can carry information for over ten miles.
