Frederick Gregory

Only the very best pilots become test pilots.  Frederick Gregory is not only a test pilot – he tested the cockpit of the Space shuttle.  He has also made a new model of the Space Shuttle’s cockpit.

One of his other inventions is a “single-handed controller”.  This allows a pilot to control with only one hand the power, roll and tilt of an aircraft.

Gregory is also part of the team that invented a new system which allows aircrafts to land without the need of a human pilot.  This system makes it possible to land in thick fog, under computer control.  It is now in use at all major airports.

Gregory was expected to become the first Black American in space, but this honour went to Guy Bluford, in August 1998.
